Job Requirements

  • Must be an honorably retired commissioned DPS officer
  • last position must have been as a commissioned officer with DPS
  • high school diploma or equivalent
  • minimum 4,000 hours of flight time as Lieutenant-Pilot II or higher
  • valid Texas Driver License
  • current FAA Class II Medical Certificate
  • FAA ATP rating and/or CFI rating in helicopter and/or fixed-wing aircraft
  • previously held Pilot-in-Command privileges in both fixed-wing and rotorcraft
  • pass semi-annual firearms qualification
  • maintain physical readiness standards
  • ability to work after hours, weekends, and travel frequently overnight and for extended periods
  • availability on call 24/7
  • ability to comply with departmental policies and regulations
  • proficiency with relevant technology and software
  • ability to maintain confidentiality
  • familiarity with state and federal law enforcement regulations
  • capable of performing duties as a commissioned peace officer

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • must be an honorably retired DPS commissioned officer with rank of Lieutenant-Pilot II or higher in the Aircraft Division
  • minimum of 4,000 hours of documented flight time
  • valid Texas Driver License
  • pass semi-annual firearms qualification test
  • possess TCOLE Basic Law Enforcement Certificate
  • current FAA Class II Medical Certificate
  • FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Rating and/or Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) Rating in helicopter and/or fixed-wing aircraft
  • previous Pilot-in-Command privileges in both fixed-wing and rotorcraft
  • working knowledge of TXDPS, state, and federal regulations
  • thorough knowledge of FAA rules for piloting departmental aircraft
  • ability to react calmly and lead in emergencies
  • strong organizational and prioritization skills
  • excellent communication and presentation skills
  • proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • ability to handle confidential information responsibly

Job Duties

  • Operate DPS aircraft in a safe and professional manner
  • evaluate general safety of aircraft based on mechanical performance and ensure maintenance and repairs are performed when needed
  • obtain latest weather information and make flight feasibility decisions including preparing and filing flight plans
  • inspect aircraft controls, fuel, and fluids before flights and ensure proper storage and refueling after flights
  • pilot aircraft to search ground for evidence, persons, or items relevant to criminal investigations and relay information to ground teams
  • participate in surveillance activities and assist law enforcement officers by maintaining ground surveillance
  • transport and ensure safety of protected witnesses, informants, large sums of money, and other investigation-related items
  • transport prisoners, suspects, witnesses, law enforcement officers, state officials, and other authorized personnel
  • provide aerial transportation for photographers and public safety officials
  • secure and transport the Governor and other state officials as needed
  • transport critically ill or injured patients and prepare aircraft to accommodate medical needs
  • provide aerial reconnaissance and surveillance during disasters and emergencies and relay information to ground teams
  • inspect motorcade routes by air to identify potential security threats
  • monitor traffic flow from the air and inspect roads after severe conditions
  • participate in search and rescue efforts for lost or stranded persons using helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft
  • assist in criminal investigations by securing scenes, photographing evidence, questioning witnesses, and restraining suspects
  • implement the Aircraft Operations Division's Mishap Plan
  • participate as a member of interview boards in hiring procedures
  • perform duties as a commissioned peace officer as required
  • maintain and submit required records and reports
  • attend work regularly and observe approved work hours
  • perform other duties as assigned
