Job Requirements

  • Be a resident of the State of Colorado at the time of application
  • must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • ability to bend, lift, stoop, reach, walk, and stand for extended periods
  • utilization of appropriate personal protective equipment
  • ability to understand and carry out verbal or written instructions
  • completion of ASL proficiency at survival skill level within a specified period
  • knowledge or experience with Nutri-kids program desired
  • compliance with all health and safety regulations
  • submission of a complete application including salary history, references, and relevant documentation
  • willingness to establish residency in Colorado if hired

Job Qualifications

  • Two years of relevant experience in food preparation, food handling, or food service in a school, residential, hospital, or institutional setting
  • proficiency in American Sign Language at survival skill level or willingness to attain
  • knowledge of National School Lunch Program procedures and regulations
  • experience with special diets and altered texture modifications
  • ability to use technology including email, internet, word processing, and spreadsheets
  • effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • strong problem-solving and organizational abilities
  • ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • courteous, professional, and helpful attitude

Job Duties

  • Prepare designated food for meals, set up the serving line, and serve meals as needed
  • bake from scratch and mix dough and batters for breads, cakes, and other baked items
  • ensure the salad bar is prepared fresh for lunch and dinner meals
  • finish, portion, and package products by icing, topping, cutting, and wrapping items
  • read nutrient analysis and production logs to ensure sufficient food preparation
  • scale recipes based on standardized recipes
  • provide input to recipe adjustments and production schedules
  • maintain equipment cleanly and safely
  • coordinate with other cooks to manage food serving and prevent student wait times
  • check-in weekly grocery orders and verify items
  • notify Food Service Manager in advance for orders
  • coordinate ordering of baking supplies
  • ensure food looks appealing and tastes good
  • maintain kitchen cleanliness, sweep and mop daily
  • store cleaning supplies securely
  • ensure safety standards
  • store USDA foods separately and label properly
  • monitor cooler and freezer temperatures
  • refrigerate and freeze meats properly and rotate foods using FIFO
  • check food temperatures on serving line
  • ensure dish machine operates correctly
  • use proper serving utensils and gloves
  • store food properly covered, labeled, and dated
  • document temperatures on HACCP logs
  • check daily emails
  • coordinate food orders and requests
  • communicate time off with Food Service Manager
  • read and respond to interdepartmental emails
  • submit leave requests in writing and attach complete forms
  • maintain accurate daily food production logs with temperature and usage records
  • complete monthly inventories and submit to Food Service Manager
  • fill incident reports timely
  • communicate courteously with staff, students, and families
  • use sign language to communicate and attend sign classes weekly
  • solve immediate cooking problems and follow up
  • coordinate dorm cooking skills pickups
  • record daily meal counts and track leftovers
  • perform all other duties assigned by Food Service Manager
