Job Requirements

  • Must be a resident of the State of Colorado at the time of application
  • two years of relevant experience in related food service
  • ability to lift 50 pounds
  • ability to use personal protective equipment as required
  • ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
  • physical ability to bend, lift, stoop, reach, walk, and stand for extended periods
  • willingness to learn and utilize American Sign Language
  • knowledge of National School Lunch Program procedures
  • ability to safely handle and store food according to guidelines
  • proficiency or willingness to use computer software related to the job
  • ability to respond positively to feedback and work independently and in teams

Job Qualifications

  • Two years of relevant experience in food preparation and service in school, residential, hospital, or institutional settings
  • knowledge of National School Lunch Program procedures and regulations
  • familiarity with special diets and texture modifications for special needs students
  • ability to lift 50 pounds and perform physical tasks including bending, lifting, stooping, reaching, walking, and standing for extended periods
  • proficiency or willingness to attain survival level American Sign Language skills
  • ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • effective organization and problem-solving skills
  • ability to utilize various computer software applications including email, word processing, and spreadsheets
  • a courteous, professional, and helpful attitude
  • knowledge of Nutri-kids program desired

Job Duties

  • Prepare designated food for meals, set up the serving line, and serve meals as needed
  • bake from scratch, including dough, batters, breads, cakes, cookies, puddings, cobblers, and similar items
  • ensure the salad bar is fresh for lunch and dinner
  • finish, portion, and package products by icing, topping, cutting, slicing, placing on trays, or wrapping items
  • read nutrient analysis and production logs to ensure adequate food preparation
  • scale recipes based on standardized recipes
  • provide input on recipe adjustments and production schedules
  • maintain kitchen equipment in a clean, efficient, and safe manner
  • coordinate with other cooks to manage food preparation and serving times
  • check in weekly grocery orders and verify items received
  • notify the Food Service Manager of food ordering needs
  • ensure food presentation and taste quality
  • maintain kitchen cleanliness including sweeping and mopping daily
  • store cleaning supplies securely
  • uphold safety standards and proper food storage practices including separate storage for USDA foods
  • monitor cooler and freezer temperatures
  • rotate food stocks using FIFO method
  • check food temperatures on serving line
  • ensure dish machine functionality
  • enforce use of proper serving utensils and gloves
  • document required food temperatures on HACCP logs
  • monitor and respond to email communications daily
  • coordinate food orders and communicate time-off requests appropriately
  • maintain accurate food production and inventory records
  • complete incident reports promptly
  • communicate courteously with staff, students, and families using sign language
  • attend sign language classes to improve skills
  • solve immediate cooking issues effectively
  • coordinate communication and documentation including meal counts and leave requests
  • perform all other duties as assigned by the Food Service Manager
