Job Requirements

  • Must not pose a direct threat to others' health or safety
  • Must follow dietary uniform standards
  • Must be able to handle prolonged standing, bending, and turning
  • Must be able to handle repetitive motion
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment
  • Must meet health requirements including medical and physical exam
  • Must be able to lift minimum 40 pounds and push, pull, or carry as necessary
  • Must tolerate mental and emotional stress of position
  • Must be able to function independently and with integrity
  • Must maintain confidentiality and treat residents with respect
  • Must be willing to assist in emergencies

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous food service experience preferred
  • Knowledge of dietary practices and procedures
  • Ability to work harmoniously with personnel

  • Willingness to learn new methods with manager approval
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment

Job Duties

  • Review menus prior to preparation of food
  • Plan the next 2 days menus
  • Prepare special diet foods
  • Complete necessary forms, reports, etc., and submit to the Dietary Production Manager
  • Coordinate dietary service with other departments as necessary
  • Work with the facility's Clinical and Production Managers and implement recommended changes
  • Assure that all dietary procedures are followed according to policies
  • Assist in standardizing work methods
  • Assume responsibility and accountability as Cook
  • Maintain and file menus as per policies
  • Assist in food service production to assure timely meal preparation
  • Follow diet changes and new diets from Nursing Services
  • Oversee kitchen meal service
  • Possess knowledge of other dietary positions
  • Develop and maintain good rapport with inter-department personnel
  • Create a warm, personal, and calm environment
  • Ensure department personnel follow dietary policies
  • Report complaints and problems
  • Follow plan of action during emergencies and staff shortages
  • Participate in department studies and projects
  • Attend workshops and seminars as directed
  • Complete prep items up to 2 days ahead
  • Prepare meals according to menus
  • Serve appetizing meals on time
  • Serve food using portion control procedures
  • Prepare therapeutic diet foods
  • Use standardized recipes and special diet orders
  • Complete accurate records
  • Taste test food
  • Relief cooking staff to function in all dietary positions
  • Assist other staff as needed
  • Perform dishwashing/cleaning
  • Prepare food following sanitary regulations
  • Ensure safety regulations are followed
  • Follow Infection Control and Universal Precautions
  • Conduct daily cleaning duties
  • Maintain clean and safe department
  • Report hazardous conditions and accidents promptly
  • Maintain food storage areas
  • Dispose of food and waste properly
  • Wear protective clothing when handling infectious waste
  • Report missing or illegible labels
  • Ensure food and supplies availability
  • Assist in storing incoming food and supplies
  • Recommend equipment and supply needs
  • Maintain confidentiality of resident care information
  • Treat residents with kindness, dignity, and respect
  • Knock before entering rooms
  • Report resident grievances
  • Follow facility procedures
  • Work in well-lighted, ventilated areas
  • Move intermittently
  • Handle interruptions
  • Interact with residents, staff, visitors, and agencies
  • Handle hostile and upset persons
  • Work beyond normal hours when necessary
  • Be subject to call-back during emergencies
  • Participate in continuing education
  • Be aware of hazards such as burns, odors, dust, chemicals
  • Handle temperature changes
  • Exposure to infectious diseases
  • Lift minimum weights as required
  • Taste and smell food to ensure quality
  • Assist in evacuation during emergencies
