Job Requirements

  • Completion of high school or equivalency
  • considerable experience with solid waste collection or animal control including some supervisory experience
  • possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds
  • ability to communicate verbally in person, by telephone, and by radio
  • reliable attendance
  • successful completion of criminal background check, motor vehicle report, and pre-employment physical
  • passing pre-employment and random drug and alcohol tests
  • compliance with safety-sensitive position guidelines
  • ability to work under stress and maintain good interpersonal relations

Job Qualifications

  • Completion of high school or equivalency
  • considerable experience with solid waste collection or animal control including supervisory experience
  • valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • knowledge of solid waste collection processes, procedures, and equipment maintenance
  • knowledge of state and local solid waste and animal control regulations
  • ability to prepare reports
  • effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • supervisory experience with crews in solid waste collection and animal control
  • computer operation skills
  • ability to work outdoors and manage teams in various weather conditions

Job Duties

  • Determines crew assignment daily based on workload needs
  • Oversees daily operations supervising crews involved with yard waste collection, transportation of recyclable materials, litter cleanup program, and animal control
  • Attends staff and community meetings in absence of the Director
  • Ensures vehicles are inspected daily for safety, working order, and cleanliness
  • Reviews drivers' daily reports and completes work orders for repairs
  • Responds to citizens' complaints about refuse collection and animal control
  • Performs road checks for proper billing and assists in auditing customer database
  • Inspects special pick-up requests and illegal dump sites, determining equipment and manpower requirements
  • Supervises collection and disposal of dead animals on county roads
  • Reports new customers, road conditions, and residential requests to the office
  • Communicates with residents regarding proper container use, set out times, and garbage location
  • Receives service requests and complaints and assigns staff accordingly
  • Identifies equipment and staffing needs for budget proposals and attends budget meetings
  • Reviews daily and monthly activity reports
  • Ensures proper training and adherence to safety procedures
  • Oversees collection, storage, and distribution of recyclable materials
  • Interviews applicants and makes hiring and disciplinary recommendations
  • Provides backup to the Director when needed
