Job Requirements

  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or related field
  • six years of increasingly responsible professional civil engineering or public works infrastructure maintenance experience
  • three years in a management or supervisory role
  • possession of a valid California Driver's License
  • ability to physically perform duties in office and field environments
  • knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, and safety protocols
  • excellent communication and leadership skills
  • ability to manage budgets and contracts
  • capacity to conduct research and develop improvements
  • willingness to respond to emergency situations
  • valid Professional Engineer registration required for some positions.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field
  • six years of professional civil engineering or public works infrastructure maintenance experience
  • three years in a management or supervisory capacity
  • knowledge of administrative principles and practices
  • leadership and team-building skills
  • experience with budget development and contract administration
  • understanding of federal, state, and local laws and regulations
  • ability to prepare technical and administrative reports
  • strong communication skills
  • ability to foster relationships with government agencies and community groups
  • proficiency in modern business tools and software
  • registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) preferred for some assignments
  • valid California Driver's License.

Job Duties

  • Assume management responsibility for an assigned division within the Public Works Department
  • serve in an acting capacity during the absence of the Director of Public Works
  • develop, direct, and coordinate goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the department
  • recommend and administer policies and service levels
  • manage the development and administration of departmental budgets
  • select, train, motivate, and evaluate assigned personnel
  • monitor and evaluate efficiency of service delivery methods
  • represent the department to City officials and outside agencies
  • conduct operational studies and recommend program modifications
  • participate in presentations to City Council and committees
  • attend professional group meetings and stay current with trends
  • maintain departmental files and prepare reports
  • respond to public inquiries and complaints
  • ensure staff compliance with safety protocols
  • coordinate capital improvement projects
  • manage maintenance and repair of City infrastructure including streets, storm drains, and wastewater treatment
  • schedule and direct maintenance staff
  • inspect and approve work projects
  • respond to emergency situations.
