Job Requirements

  • 3 months of general experience or familiarity with customer service, record-keeping, and clinic maintenance duties for GS-2
  • 6 months of general experience or completion of relevant education programs for GS-3
  • 6 months of general experience plus 6 months of specialized dental assistant experience for GS-4
  • compliance with radiological certification standards per 42 CFR Part 75 for GS-3 and GS-4
  • federal Time-In-Grade requirements for promotion where applicable
  • ability to meet qualification requirements within 30 days of announcement closing
  • submission of transcripts or course listings if education is used for qualification
  • certification or proof of radiological competency
  • applicants may select up to 5 locations for consideration

Job Qualifications

  • high school graduate or equivalent
  • completion of a 1-year dental assistant program or 1 year of an accredited dental hygiene program including radiation courses
  • practical nurse training approved by state or district body
  • combination of education and experience demonstrating capability in dental assisting
  • current IHS or state dental radiological health and safety certification for GS-3 and GS-4 levels
  • demonstrated ability to provide chairside assistance and operate dental radiographic equipment
  • knowledge of dental instruments and dental clinic procedures
  • experience in customer service and record-keeping in clinical setting

Job Duties

  • provide chairside assistance during dental procedures
  • set up proper instruments and materials for dental treatments
  • record treatments rendered and maintain accurate patient records
  • provide receptionist services including scheduling and patient communication
  • expose and process digital oral x-rays according to radiological health and safety standards
  • maintain cleanliness and proper function of dental operatory and clinic areas
  • comply with radiation health and safety regulations and certification requirements
