Job Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have had primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
  • Must be referred for selection before reaching 40 years of age unless exempt
  • Must complete paid pre-academy and 101-day academy training
  • Must pass CBPO Entrance Exam
  • Must be physically fit to perform law enforcement duties
  • Must undergo background and security clearance checks
  • Must complete online Spanish training if assigned to southern border or specific duty locations

Job Qualifications

  • Three years of general work experience demonstrating interpersonal skills and ability to learn
  • Bachelor’s degree or four-year course from an accredited college or university
  • Combination of college education and work experience
  • One year of specialized work experience equivalent to next lower grade level for GS-7
  • Experience performing physical inspections for criminal activity, fraud, or illegal operations
  • Knowledge of federal, state, or local laws and regulations
  • Bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or one year of graduate education for GS-7
  • Combination of specialized work experience and graduate education
  • Previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience for GS-9 eligibility

Job Duties

  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations
  • Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel
  • Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances
  • Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States
  • Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband
  • Participating in ongoing training and law enforcement academy programs
  • Collaborating with other law enforcement and homeland security agencies
