Job Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have had primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
  • Must be referred before reaching 40th birthday unless exempt
  • May qualify for Veterans Recruitment Appointment
  • Must complete paid pre-academy orientation and 101-day CBP Field Operations Academy
  • Must pass the CBPO Entrance Exam and any applicable Spanish training
  • Must meet physical fitness and background investigation standards
  • Must be willing to work at any assigned duty location
  • Age restriction may be waived for certain federal law enforcement or military service
  • Must possess valid documentation for employment eligibility

Job Qualifications

  • A minimum of three years full-time general work experience demonstrating the ability to meet and deal with people and to apply a body of facts
  • Or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Or a combination of college education and general work experience
  • For GS-7 level, a minimum of one year specialized experience performing physical inspections and applying federal laws
  • Bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or one year of graduate-level education for GS-7
  • Combination of specialized work experience and graduate education
  • Previous or current federal law enforcement or military law enforcement experience may qualify for GS-9

Job Duties

  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations
  • Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel
  • Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances
  • Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States
  • Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband
  • Conducting physical inspections and utilizing investigative techniques
  • Enforcing compliance with federal laws at border checkpoints
