Job Requirements

  • u.s. citizen
  • primary u.s. residency for at least three of the last five years
  • age under 40 at selection unless exempted
  • pass CBP Entrance Exam
  • complete pre-academy orientation and 101-day training academy
  • physical fitness requirements
  • able to attend online Spanish training if assigned to certain duty locations
  • no felony convictions
  • veterans’ preference eligibility if applicable

Job Qualifications

  • a minimum of three years full-time general work experience demonstrating interpersonal skills and ability to learn
  • a bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience for GS-5
  • at least one year of specialized full-time work experience for GS-7
  • knowledge of federal, state, or local laws and regulations
  • strong observational and analytical skills
  • ability to make legal determinations
  • prior law enforcement or military experience for higher grade consideration
  • U.S. citizenship
  • residency requirements
  • compliance with age restrictions or veterans’ preference
  • successful completion of CBP training academy

Job Duties

  • enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations
  • facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel
  • conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances
  • determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States
  • preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband
  • assisting in maintaining border security
  • collaborating with other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies
