Job Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
  • Age restriction of being referred for selection before the 40th birthday unless exempt
  • Successful completion of paid pre-academy orientation and 101-day CBP Field Operations Academy
  • Ability to pass the CBPO Entrance Exam
  • Willingness to attend online Spanish training if assigned to certain duty locations

Job Qualifications

  • A minimum of three years full-time general work experience demonstrating ability to meet and deal with people and apply a body of facts
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Combination of college education and work experience
  • Specialized work experience performing physical inspections and applying laws related to criminal activity or fraud for GS-7 grade
  • Bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement or one year of graduate-level education for GS-7 grade
  • Combination of specialized work experience and graduate-level education
  • Previous law enforcement or military law enforcement experience may qualify for GS-9 grade

Job Duties

  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations
  • Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel
  • Conducting inspections of individuals, conveyances, and cargo
  • Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States
  • Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and contraband
  • Applying federal, state, and local laws and regulations to make enforcement decisions
  • Participating in specialized training and adhering to physical fitness requirements
