Job Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
  • Age under 40 at the time of referral unless exempted
  • Ability to successfully complete a 101-day training academy
  • Pass the CBPO Entrance Exam
  • Meet background and security clearance standards
  • Willingness to accept duty location based on agency needs
  • Veterans’ preference eligible candidates may have exceptions
  • Completion of pre-academy orientation
  • Ability to complete online Spanish training if assigned to southern border, Miami, or Puerto Rico duty locations

Job Qualifications

  • A minimum of three years full-time general work experience demonstrating interpersonal skills and ability to learn and apply facts
  • Or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Or a combination of college education and general work experience
  • Specialized experience for GS-7 includes performing physical inspections, utilizing observational techniques, evaluating facts, and making lawful determinations
  • Superior academic achievement or graduate-level education qualifies for GS-7
  • Previous law enforcement or military law enforcement experience may qualify for GS-9
  • Successful completion of required training and the CBPO Entrance Exam

Job Duties

  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations
  • Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel
  • Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances
  • Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States
  • Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband
  • Participating in continuous training to maintain law enforcement proficiency
  • Collaborating with other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders
