Job Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • must have had primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
  • must meet age restrictions applicable to federal law enforcement retirement provisions
  • must complete a paid pre-academy orientation and a 101-day training program at FLETC
  • candidates assigned to certain locations must pass an online Spanish training program
  • must be eligible for federal employment
  • veterans may qualify for exceptions to age restrictions

Job Qualifications

  • A minimum of three years full-time general work experience demonstrating ability to meet and deal with people and apply a body of facts
  • or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • or a combination of college education and general work experience
  • for GS-7 level, one year of specialized full-time work experience equivalent to the next lower grade level including inspections, evaluations, and enforcement actions
  • or a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or one full year of graduate-level education
  • combination of specialized work experience and graduate education
  • previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience may qualify for GS-9

Job Duties

  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations
  • facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel
  • conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances
  • determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States
  • preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband
