Job Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • primary U.S. residency for three of the last five years
  • age under 40 at time of selection unless exempt
  • ability to complete training and pass examinations
  • meet physical and medical requirements
  • pass background and security investigations
  • submit required application materials including resume and transcripts

Job Qualifications

  • For GS-5: minimum of three years full-time general work experience
  • bachelor’s degree or four-year course leading to a degree
  • combination of education and experience
  • for GS-7: one year specialized work experience performing physical inspections and applying laws
  • bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or one year graduate education
  • combination of specialized experience and graduate education
  • previous federal or military law enforcement experience may qualify for GS-9

Job Duties

  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations
  • facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel
  • conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances
  • determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States
  • preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband
  • attending a 101-day training academy
  • completing an online Spanish training program if assigned to specified duty locations
