Job Requirements
- U.S. citizenship
- Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
- Age under 40 at time of selection, with exceptions for certain prior federal law enforcement service
- Submission to a paid pre-academy orientation and successful completion of the 101-day CBP Field Operations Academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center
- Willingness to accept assigned duty locations including border and port areas
- Ability to pass background and security checks
- Eligibility for a law enforcement retirement plan
- Veterans’ preference eligibility may allow certain exceptions
Job Qualifications
- A minimum of three years full-time general work experience demonstrating the ability to meet and deal with people and apply a body of facts
- or a bachelor’s degree or completion of a full four-year course of study in any field from an accredited college or university
- or a combination of college education and general work experience
- For GS-7 level, a minimum of one year of specialized full-time work experience performing physical inspections, utilizing observational techniques, evaluating facts, and making determinations as per relevant laws and regulations
- or a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or one full year of graduate-level education
- or a combination of specialized work experience and graduate-level education
- Previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience may qualify for GS-9 level
Job Duties
- Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations
- Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel
- Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances
- Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States
- Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband
- Participating in ongoing training and professional development
- Responding to emergent security threats and incidents
