Job Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have had primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
  • Must meet age restriction requirements before reaching 40th birthday unless exempt
  • Must complete a paid pre-academy orientation and a 101-day training program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center
  • Must pass the CBPO Entrance Exam
  • Must submit resume, transcripts, and supporting documents
  • Must meet Veterans’ Preference eligibility if applicable

Job Qualifications

  • Experience demonstrating ability to meet and deal with people and learn and apply a body of facts for GS-5
  • Bachelor’s degree or successful completion of a four-year course of study for GS-5
  • Combination of college education and general work experience for GS-5
  • Specialized full-time work experience equivalent to the next lower grade level including physical inspections, evaluating facts, and applying laws for GS-7
  • Bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement or one full year of graduate-level education for GS-7
  • Combination of specialized work experience and graduate education for GS-7
  • Previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience may qualify for GS-9

Job Duties

  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations
  • Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel
  • Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances
  • Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States
  • Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband
