Job Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
  • age under 40 at time of referral unless exempt due to federal law enforcement retirement provisions
  • successful completion of CBP Field Operations Academy training
  • must attend and pass Spanish training for certain duty locations
  • ability to complete a paid pre-academy orientation
  • eligibility for federal employment

Job Qualifications

  • A minimum of three years full-time general work experience demonstrating ability to meet and deal with people and learn and apply a body of facts
  • or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • or combination of education and experience
  • for GS-7 level, one year of specialized work experience equivalent to next lower grade level performing inspections and law enforcement duties
  • or bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement or one year of graduate-level education
  • combination of specialized work experience and graduate education
  • previous law enforcement or military law enforcement experience for GS-9 level

Job Duties

  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agricultural laws and regulations
  • facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel
  • conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances
  • determining admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States
  • preventing illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods, and smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband
