Job Description

The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization committed to improving the health and well-being of all residents of New York City. Working in close partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives designed to improve community health throughout the city's diverse neighborhoods. Job Requirements

  • Basic knife skills and ability to execute basic cooking techniques
  • Experience or training in nutrition or culinary arts
  • Commitment to teamwork and effective communication practices
  • Dynamic personality and excellent presentation, interpersonal, and communications skills
  • Ability to adapt recipes to reflect the food culture of communities served
  • Knowledge about regional produce
  • ServSafe certification or successful completion of the NYC Food Protection course prior to onsite start date
  • Ability to work in multi-cultural settings with racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse populations
  • Experience implementing cooking demonstrations
  • Experience working as part of a team
  • Understanding of and experience with regional food systems and food security issues
  • Strong customer service skills and enjoyment in working with people
  • Willing and able to stand for long periods of time and work outside in inclement weather conditions
  • Willing and able to regularly lift and transport items weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Residency in the New York City Tri-state area

Job Duties

  • Prepare and implement interactive cooking demonstrations using local and seasonal produce recipes
  • Collaborate with Nutrition and Bilingual Educators to deliver nutrition education at farmers markets
  • Maintain food safety standards including cleaning and sanitation of cooking equipment
  • Assist with set-up and breakdown of market tents, cooking equipment, and educational materials
  • Promote program participation and engage with community members at market events
  • Participate in monthly staff meetings and training sessions to enhance skills and program effectiveness
  • Adapt recipes to reflect the cultural food preferences of the communities served
