Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing science
  • Minimum five years school nursing experience
  • Valid Pennsylvania nursing license
  • Valid school nurse certification
  • Supervisory certification or current enrollment in Supervisory Certification program
  • Ability to perform the essential duties satisfactorily
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals and legal documents
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and regulatory agencies
  • Ability to write reports and manuals
  • Ability to work mathematical concepts such as probability and statistics
  • Ability to define problems and draw conclusions
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships
  • Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing science
  • Master’s degree preferred in nursing or education
  • Minimum five years of school nursing experience
  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills
  • Possession of valid nursing license issued by Pennsylvania Board of Nursing
  • Valid school nurse certification and supervisory certification issued by Pennsylvania Department of Education or enrollment in supervisory program
  • Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license
  • Ability to read and interpret professional and technical documents
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence
  • Ability to present information clearly to various audiences
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts for practical situations
  • Ability to develop and maintain records and reports
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Ability to maintain self-control in stressful situations
  • Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing.

Job Duties

  • Maintains awareness of federal and state laws, regulations and guidelines impacting the school health program
  • Assists in the implementation of the Reading School District school health program
  • Reviews and supervises the Reading School District dental health program
  • Facilitates Reading School District Wellness Council, supervising and reviewing programs and initiatives
  • Acts as liaison between certified and non-certified school nurses and district consultants and health departments
  • Maintains ongoing review of district procedures, policies and forms related to school health services
  • Controls distribution and use of all school health services forms
  • Reviews and updates standing medication orders annually with School Physician Consultant
  • Reviews and updates Dental Health Plan annually with dental hygienists and School Dental Consultant
  • Approves vision clinic dates and processes
  • Coordinates and assists in health clinic functions such as vision screenings and audiometer maintenance
  • Assists in budget planning, inventory management and supply distribution
  • Participates in hiring, supervising, and evaluating school health services staff
  • Coordinates in-service training and professional improvement programs
  • Documents and recommends disciplinary actions
  • Supports students with chronic health care needs during summer and extended programs
  • Prepares required reports including SHARRS report for the Department of Health
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
