Job Requirements
- Equivalent to completion of twelfth (12th) grade
- One year of paid food preparation experience for Cook
- Two years of progressively challenging cooking and food prep experience including one year of supervisory responsibility for Cook Lead
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse populations
- Ability to operate contemporary office equipment including computers
- Ability to prepare, cook and bake large quantities of food
- Follow recipes and instructions accurately
- Ability to requisition food and supplies to meet changing needs
- Ability to maintain sanitary conditions in institutional kitchens
- Pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
- Undergo background investigation and possible re-investigation
- May require physical examination
- Employment eligibility verification through E-Verify on the first day of employment
Job Qualifications
- Equivalent to completion of twelfth (12th) grade
- One (1) year of paid food preparation experience for Cook
- Two (2) years of progressively more difficult and varied cooking and food preparation experience for Cook Lead
- One (1) year of supervisory responsibilities for Cook Lead
- Knowledge of safe and proper use of kitchen equipment
- Knowledge of sanitation practices and procedures in food preparation areas
- Ability to compute percentages, decimals and fractions
- Understanding of U.S. monetary system
- Knowledge of food industry terminology
- Knowledge of storage and preservation of foods for Cook Lead
- Understanding of basic nutrition and meal planning for Cook Lead
Job Duties
- Cook and oversee the cooking of a variety of foods and special diets
- Make simple desserts such as cakes, puddings, and pies
- Use a variety of hand and motorized kitchen equipment and machines
- Perform frying, grilling, stewing, roasting and baking
- Estimate food supplies needed
- Supervise lower-level cooks and inmate staff in food preparation
- Perform butchering tasks
- Order produce, meats and staples for jail feeding programs
- Prepare menus and special diets
- Account for food and hardware items on an assigned shift
