Job Requirements

  • Must have two years of institutional cooking experience or equivalent
  • current Utah Food Handler Permit or Food Protection Manager certification accredited by ANSI
  • ability to perform essential job functions
  • ability to comply with departmental attendance and evaluation policies
  • capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds
  • able to work in hot or cold temperatures and handle equipment and cleaning chemicals
  • strong human relations, communication, and computer skills
  • willingness to work variable shifts including weekends
  • ability to organize and facilitate functions with minimal notice

Job Qualifications

  • knowledge of cost-control methods and prioritization for timely delivery and service
  • knowledge of operating heavy mechanized kitchen equipment including slicers, mixers, blenders, steam kettles, fryers, and choppers

Job Duties

  • Bake, roast, stew, fry, steam-cook, or otherwise prepare food products following hospital recipes and instructions
  • utilize knowledge of cooking methods and preparation times to provide adequate amounts of properly prepared foods in a timely manner
  • adjust recipes based on factors such as altitude and special diet orders
  • operate cooking machinery and equipment including slicers, choppers, steamers, broilers, griddles, fryers, braziers, blenders, and microwaves following manufacturer instructions and hospital procedures
  • weigh cooking products to ensure proper portion delivery
  • clean work areas, refrigerators, stoves, ovens, storeroom, and utensils to comply with sanitation requirements
  • perform quality checks for taste and appearance of finished food products
  • use department-specific computer software and daily menus to complete purchase and issue requisitions and forecast cooking production
  • set up and stock area for food service delivery and assist in serving cooked items
  • order, rotate, and maintain stock levels required for cooking production by estimating needs according to the production schedule
  • assist in completing cooking production to ensure timely delivery of ordered items
  • assist with catering functions including food preparation, set-up, presentation, and clean-up
  • develop, modify, or experiment with hospital recipes and cooking procedures to improve kitchen output or services
