Job Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Three to five years cooking experience in hospital, restaurant, or hotel
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays
  • Sanitation certification by Chicago Department of Public Health and State of Illinois within 90 days of hire
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted
  • Ability to meet time constraints in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to perform cleaning tasks
  • Ability to communicate with others
  • Adaptability to varied work schedules and volume
  • Manual dexterity and eye/hand coordination
  • Compliance with safety and sanitation regulations

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma
  • Three to five years of cooking experience in hospital, restaurant, or hotel settings
  • Knowledge of all aspects of food preparation
  • Culinary arts degree desired
  • Preference for hospital cooking experience
  • Computer experience desired
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to interpret and follow recipes
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to use kitchen equipment safely
  • Ability to follow safety and sanitation procedures
  • Ability to measure and weigh food ingredients accurately
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations for recipe adjustments
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • Sanitation certified or able to obtain certification within 90 days

Job Duties

  • Prepare and cook food following prescribed recipes and production schedules
  • Ensure timely food production for patient, cafeteria, and catering services
  • Utilize food production systems including forecasting and recording production results
  • Place food into appropriate serving containers and deliver to workstations on time
  • Observe and taste food to check flavor, texture, and temperature and make judgment calls as needed
  • Batch cook to minimize waste and maintain meal quality
  • Follow HACCP procedures to maintain food safety and record temperatures
  • Maintain and sanitize work area and equipment
  • Ensure proper labeling, dating, rotation, and storage of food items
  • Report equipment needing repair
  • Monitor food spoilage and document disposal
  • Wear appropriate head coverings and gloves during food handling
  • Use proper body mechanics and observe safety regulations
  • Promote patient safety by reporting issues and participating in safety initiatives
  • Attend mandatory in-services and complete annual training
  • Submit ideas for improvements and cost control
  • Participate in efforts to improve patient satisfaction
