Job Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship is required
  • Must meet the Barely Acceptable level on both screen-out elements (ability to supervise and aptitude for work with prisoners)
  • Must possess Food Protection Manager Certification from an ANSI-accredited provider and upload proof during application
  • Eligible for and able to complete a pre-employment panel interview, urinalysis, physical exam, and background investigation
  • Ability to complete the Core Value Assessment or exempt if current BOP employee
  • Completion of "Introduction to Correctional Techniques" training at Glynco, Georgia
  • Willingness to serve a one-year probationary period
  • Maximum age limit of 36 for original appointment unless prior federal law enforcement coverage is documented
  • Compliance with Selective Service registration
  • Ability to pass required security and credit checks
  • Experience independently preparing various food types and coordinating meal preparation
  • Ability to conduct correctional security duties regularly
  • Adherence to safety and handling procedures for tools and materials

Job Qualifications

  • Significant training and experience demonstrating ability to perform essential duties
  • Knowledge of food preparation principles and techniques for large quantity cooking
  • Understanding of special and modified diets such as high protein, low cholesterol, low fat, calorie restricted, and sodium restricted diets
  • Ability to supervise inmate workers effectively
  • Possession of an approved Food Protection Manager Certification accredited by ANSI
  • Aptitude for working with prisoners
  • Knowledge of safety and security protocols in correctional environments

Job Duties

  • Provide supervision and instruction to 25-30 inmate workers assigned to cooking, butchering, baking, dining and dish duties, vegetable preparation, and dishwashing
  • Provide ongoing training to inmate workers on food production, presentation, and sanitation
  • Oversee receiving, storing, and issuing of all food and non-food items
  • Manage security operations including key control, yeast control, knife and blade control, and inmate accountability
  • Conduct routine contraband searches throughout the work area
  • Maintain institutional security and coordinate with correctional staff to uphold safety protocols
  • Prepare meats, poultry, seafood, vegetables, fruits, sauces, and gravies for regular and modified diet menus
  • Plan and coordinate meal preparation following standardized recipes, making necessary substitutions and adjustments
