Job Description

Christ House is a distinguished medical respite facility located in Washington, DC, dedicated to serving men who are experiencing homelessness and battling acute medical conditions. The facility acts as a crucial bridge for patients discharged from area hospitals, shelters, clinics, and outreach programs by offering a safe and supportive environment where they can recover adequately. The patients at Christ House suffer from a wide range of serious illnesses and injuries, including but not limited to cancer, hypertension, stroke, liver disease, kidney failure, diabetes and related amputations, HIV/AIDS, respiratory diseases, significant lacerations, fractures, and ulcerations. Job Requirements

  • high school diploma or GED
  • current ServSafe Food Handler certification required
  • minimum three years experience working in the restaurant industry
  • knowledge of proper food handling and preparation
  • previous experience working with people experiencing homelessness is highly desirable
  • previous experience working with volunteers is highly desirable
  • flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and rotating holidays
  • ability to perform physical labor or repetitive motions necessary in kitchen operation
  • ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 pounds

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • prepares meals according to planned menus and recipes under the direction of the Food Services Manager
  • prepares specially requested diets such as pureed, clear liquid, vegetarian, and alternatives for food allergies
  • prepares special meals or refreshments for patient activities, holidays, and special events
  • ensures dining tables are set properly prior to the beginning of meal service
  • ensures meals are portioned appropriately and are ready to be served by scheduled meal times
  • creates and fosters an atmosphere of hospitality for patients, residents, volunteers, and staff
  • maintains the cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen, dining room, and food storage areas
  • cleans and sanitizes kitchen food preparation and service surfaces after meals
  • ensures dishes, silverware, and cooking utensils are cleaned properly and stored appropriately
  • ensures dining room eating surfaces are cleaned and sanitized after every meal
  • provides leadership and supervision to volunteers, ensuring proper food handling practices
  • offers constructive feedback, encouragement, and gratitude to volunteers
  • performs other duties as assigned
