Job Requirements

  • Candidate must pass a post-employment physical exam and capacity examination
  • Candidate must pass a Criminal History Record Check through Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation
  • Candidate must pass a Child/Adult Abuse Record Check through Iowa Department of Human Services
  • A criminal background check is required
  • A drug screen is required prior to final offer
  • A valid State of Iowa driver’s license is required
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required
  • Ability to work overtime with minimal notice

Job Qualifications

  • Formal training in food service or meal preparation
  • Six to twelve months of experience in a large or medium scale institutional food service operation
  • Knowledge of large-scale food preparation principles and food safety standards
  • Familiarity with USDA dietary standards and child nutrition requirements
  • Ability to read and follow written recipes, menus, instructions, and procedures
  • Ability to measure food ingredients accurately
  • Skilled in preparing wholesome and appetizing meals
  • Ability to operate various kitchen appliances safely
  • Strong hygiene practices
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and youth
  • Ability to work under varied environmental conditions
  • Physical capability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and push or pull up to 70 lbs
  • Ability to perform repetitive physical motions related to food preparation
  • Ability to remain alert to safety and security issues

Job Duties

  • Prepares a variety of foods including special dietary meals such as meat, vegetables, salads, desserts, and soup using various cooking methods
  • Measures ingredients to ensure correct recipe quantities
  • Operates and maintains kitchen equipment including ovens, grills, steam tables, fryers, slicers, mixers, graters, and blenders
  • Monitors food temperatures to ensure safety standards are met during serving and storage
  • Stocks and retrieves food from shelves and walk-in freezer/refrigerator
  • Sanitizes kitchen equipment, utensils, floors, walls, counters, tables, trays, and food carts to comply with health regulations
  • Serves food portions on trays or assembly lines to meet dietary requirements
  • Assists in maintaining safety and security by monitoring resident movement and kitchen inventory
  • Assists with menu planning and food supply ordering as needed
  • Performs related duties as assigned
