Job Requirements

  • Possession of an appropriate California operator's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles
  • Serve Safe Certification
  • Two years of increasingly responsible experience in quantity food preparation and service preferably including supervisory experience
  • Experience preferably with some experience in the District as a Cafeteria Assistant
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to frequently push, pull, twist at the waist
  • Ability to perform neck flexion and rotation
  • Ability to reach above and below the shoulders
  • Ability to occasionally bend, kneel, squat, and stoop
  • Ability to frequently lift, push, pull, and carry objects from 25-50 lbs
  • Ability to handle hot material and temperature extremes
  • Ability to use hand coordination to use utensils and equipment
  • Ability to hear, speak, write and read in English
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations from memory or utilizing calculation device
  • Ability to perform repetitive finger manipulation doing data entry and/or swiping meal cards

Job Qualifications

  • Knowledge of principles and methods of preparing meals for large groups of people
  • Knowledge of proper and sanitary methods of preparing, cooking, serving and storing food
  • Knowledge of nutrient value of food in menu planning
  • Knowledge of tray lunch and/or fast food preparation
  • Knowledge of problems involved in managing a cafeteria
  • Knowledge of care and use of standard kitchen equipment and utensils
  • Knowledge of safe work practices
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of supervision and training
  • Ability to supervise and train assigned staff
  • Ability to estimate quantities needed for economical food service
  • Ability to operate equipment found in a food service unit
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions
  • Ability to keep records and prepare reports
  • Ability to account for collected money, make change and prepare and make bank deposits
  • Ability to make arithmetical calculations accurately
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships
  • Ability to operate a computer

Job Duties

  • Plan, organize and supervise the operation of a school cafeteria including a fast-food service line
  • Supervise and personally cook or prepare main dishes, salads, sandwiches, desserts and baked goods following established menu
  • Supervise and assist in the serving of meals to students and faculty
  • Maintain standards of efficiency and sanitation in food preparation
  • Assist in menu preparation
  • Estimate needed food quantities and order food to meet menu requirements
  • Receive and check food and supplies
  • Maintain proper storage of food supplies
  • Take periodic inventory of stock
  • Supervise and perform cleaning of kitchen, kitchen equipment and eating utensils
  • Outline daily duties and work schedule of assigned staff
  • Provide orientation to new staff
  • Arrange for proper maintenance of kitchen equipment
  • Prepare reports of meals served, count daily receipts and make bank deposits
  • Issue and account for student lunch tickets
  • Maintain a variety of records
  • Supervise student assistants
  • Work on a computer
  • Attend District meetings and/or in service workshops
