Job Requirements

  • No disciplinary action in the previous 12 months
  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of one year experience as Food Service Worker (Cook II) or three years of cooking experience with at least one year supervisory experience
  • Ability to work long hours standing and in high temperature conditions
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate work of employees and helpers
  • Ability to plan menus without professional dietetic principles
  • Ability to follow recipes accurately
  • Demonstrated punctuality and attendance
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships
  • Ability to maintain kitchen safety and sanitation standards

Job Qualifications

  • One or more years of experience as a Food Service Worker (Cook II)
  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED
  • Three or more years of commercial, industrial, or institutional cooking experience including one or more years in a supervisory capacity
  • Earned credit hours from an accredited college or university in food preparation, Dietetics, Nutrition, Foods and Nutrition, Food Service Management, or related areas may substitute for experience
  • ServSafe Certified or Kansas City Health Dept. Food Handler Permit preferred
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Ability to orientate, train, assign, and monitor employees
  • Strong computer, time management and communication skills
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment for large scale food preparation
  • Intermediate knowledge of kitchen management principles, food values, nutrition, special diets, and food safety regulations
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to additional responsibilities
  • Ability to maintain safety and sanitation standards
  • Effective communication and relationship-building skills

Job Duties

  • Prepare and serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu entrees
  • Direct operation of a small to moderate size facility kitchen or serve as a shift supervisor in a large facility kitchen
  • Supervise and evaluate lower-level employees, Food Service Helpers, offenders, and other helpers
  • Prepare work schedules reflecting shifts, days, and hours of work
  • Plan menus and ensure adequate quantities of food items are on hand
  • Participate in long-range planning and requisitioning of food items and equipment
  • Monitor kitchen safety and sanitation standards
  • Instruct lower-level employees in food preparation techniques
  • Allocate prepared food for distribution to dining rooms
  • Supervise cleaning of kitchens and equipment
  • Plan and supervise use of leftover food
  • Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance
  • Perform other related work as assigned
