Job Description

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is a pivotal state agency dedicated to enhancing the wellbeing and independence of Texans through comprehensive health and human services programs. Established with the mission to serve people across the state, HHSC is known for its commitment to providing quality support and care for individuals, particularly those with specialized needs. Job Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent preferred
  • One year of food preparation work including hot and cold food experience
  • Texas Food Manager certification or Food Protection Manager Certification required within six months of hire
  • Valid driver’s license and eligible driving record per HHSC policy
  • Ability to lift at least 25 pounds
  • Ability to stand and walk on hard floors for extended periods
  • Ability to work in hot and cold conditions
  • Ability to speak and read English
  • Must pass fingerprint criminal background check, drug screen, and registry checks
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays, extended hours and overtime if needed
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Males between 18-25 registered with Selective Service
  • Compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act accommodations
  • Must adhere to all safety and sanitation regulations
  • Not eligible for telework
  • Up to 5% travel

Job Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent preferred
  • One year of food preparation work including hot and cold food experience
  • Experience cooking in a health care food service operation preferred
  • Experience guiding, training, or overseeing others preferred
  • Knowledge of food preparation methods, specialized diets, and sanitation regulations
  • Skilled in cooking, baking, and use of food preparation equipment
  • Ability to follow recipes and complete basic math
  • Ability to maintain records and ensure compliance with food safety standards

Job Duties

  • Perform advanced senior-level food production tasks
  • Provide shift leadership and direction during meal preparation and service
  • Oversee preparation, cooking, portioning, distributing, and serving food for regular and modified diets
  • Ensure food handling complies with federal and state guidelines
  • Review menus to determine food types and quantities
  • Inspect and maintain food service equipment and sanitation standards
  • Train and oversee kitchen staff in food preparation, sanitation, safety, and equipment use
  • Monitor inventories and food consumption records
  • Complete required reports and documentation
  • Operate delivery vehicles as needed
  • Recommend improvements to kitchen operations
