Job Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent preferred
  • One year of food preparation work experience including hot and cold food preparation
  • Six months experience cooking in a healthcare food service operation preferred
  • Experience guiding, training or overseeing the work of others preferred
  • Ability to pass fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks
  • Ability to work rotating, extended hours, weekends and holidays
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Valid driver’s license and eligible driving record required
  • Completion of Texas food handler training and certification within six months of hire
  • Male applicants between ages 18-25 must be registered with Selective Service
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds, bend, stand and work in hot or cold conditions
  • Ability to work harmoniously and productively with coworkers and residents
  • Ability to complete basic math and follow instructions
  • No telework eligibility
  • Up to 5% travel may be required
  • Must pass random drug testing
  • Must comply with ADA accommodations and E-Verify documentation requirements.

Job Qualifications

  • One year of food preparation work experience including hot and cold food preparation
  • Knowledge of food preparation methods and food storage standards
  • Knowledge of specialized diets and textures
  • Skill in cooking, baking, and use of food preparation appliances and equipment
  • Skill in operating and sanitizing food service equipment
  • Ability to interpret and follow recipes accurately
  • Strong leadership skills to provide guidance, training and oversight to kitchen staff
  • Ability to analyze problems and recommend solutions
  • Ability to serve food, maintain clean dining and food preparation areas, and keep accurate records
  • Ability to speak and read English
  • Ability to complete basic math used in cooking and preparation
  • Ability to lift at least 25 pounds and work in varied temperature conditions
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and within strict time limits
  • Preferred experience includes 6 months cooking in healthcare food service and experience training or overseeing others
  • Graduation from standard high school or equivalent is preferred
  • Driver's license and eligible driving record according to HHSC policies
  • Completion of Texas Food Handler training and obtaining Texas Food Manager or Food Protection Manager Certification within six months of hire.

Job Duties

  • Attend work on a regular basis and work assigned shifts including extended, rotating, or overtime schedules as needed
  • Review menus to determine food types, quantities, and specialized diets for preparation
  • Plan, test, adjust, and evaluate standardized recipes and food consumption records
  • Serve as a lead worker providing direction to kitchen staff during shifts and ensure compliance with food safety and sanitation guidelines
  • Inspect dining and food preparation areas for compliance with safety, health, and sanitation standards
  • Guide, train, and oversee staff in preparing, seasoning, cooking, and assembling food for various diets
  • Operate and maintain food service equipment safely and provide training to reduce injury and equipment damage
  • Calculate proper food quantities and portions to ensure adequate supply and minimize waste
  • Oversee and participate in safe and sanitary distribution of food including special diets, maintaining proper serving temperatures
  • Complete necessary records, reports, and documentation regarding kitchen operations, equipment maintenance, and staff performance
  • Monitor inventory, inspect food deliveries, and ensure proper storage of perishables under correct conditions
  • Administer orientation and in-service training programs covering safety, sanitation, food preparation, and equipment operation
  • Participate in disaster response, recovery, or continuity of operations as needed
  • Perform additional duties such as working ingredient rooms, facility canteens, or driving delivery vehicles as required.
