Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Twelve months experience cooking food in service operation
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds
  • Ability to work in hot and cold conditions
  • Ability to bend, reach, stand, and walk on hard floors for extended periods
  • Ability to complete basic math calculations
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • If driving a state vehicle, must possess a valid Texas driver license within 90 days of hire
  • Pass fingerprint criminal background check
  • Pass pre-employment drug screen
  • Pass registry checks including Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct
  • Males 18-25 must be registered with Selective Service
  • Compliance with HHSC immunization policy

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Twelve months experience cooking food in service operation
  • Knowledge of food preparation methods and sanitation regulations
  • Skills in operation and sanitizing of food service equipment
  • Ability to prepare and serve food safely
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Ability to speak and read English
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Basic math skills for cooking and preparation
  • Ability to work in hot and cold conditions
  • Ability to lift minimum of 25 pounds
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods
  • Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers and patients

Job Duties

  • Prepare, cook, portion, distribute, and serve food for regular and therapeutic diets
  • Follow prescribed menus, recipes, standards, and complete necessary reports
  • Maintain sanitation of equipment and work areas
  • Work in ingredient room or drive delivery vehicle as required
  • Prepare and portion food for special diets following food service procedures
  • Assist in serving food for special diets and follow food service safety procedures
  • Receive delivery of food and supplies from vendors
  • Follow procedures for sanitation and storage of dishes and equipment
  • Maintain work areas in a sanitary and organized manner
  • Handle cash in hospital canteen safely and securely
  • Respond to telephone inquiries promptly and positively
  • Participate in disaster response and Continuity of Operations activation as required
