Job Requirements

  • 6 months of food preparation experience
  • 6 months cooking experience in healthcare food service preferred
  • High school graduation or equivalent preferred
  • Valid Texas driver’s license and eligible driving record per HHSC policy
  • Completion of Texas Food Handler training
  • Obtain Food Manager Certification within 6 months of hire
  • Pass fingerprint criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen
  • Registration with Selective Service for males age 18-25
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, overtime, and extended hours
  • Must pass registry checks including Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System and others
  • Ability to lift minimum of 25 pounds
  • Ability to work in hot/cold conditions
  • Ability to walk/stand for extended periods

Job Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent preferred
  • 6 months food preparation experience required
  • 6 months cooking experience in a healthcare food service preferred
  • Knowledge of food preparation methods, sanitation, and specialized diets
  • Skill in cooking, baking, and operating food equipment
  • Ability to follow recipes, complete basic cooking math, and maintain records
  • Ability to lift minimum of 25 pounds and work in varying temperature conditions
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work productively with others
  • Ability to guide and train subordinate staff
  • Valid Texas driver's license or ability to obtain one within requirements
  • Texas Food Handler training and Food Manager certification required within 6 months of hire

Job Duties

  • Attend work on a regular basis and work specific or rotating shifts including overtime as needed
  • Prepare, season, cook, and assemble food for regular and modified diets ensuring sanitary conditions
  • Operate and maintain food service equipment safely and train others in its use
  • Calculate food quantities using standardized menus and recipes to meet dietary needs and reduce waste
  • Distribute and serve food following safety procedures including for special diets
  • Maintain sanitation of kitchen, stock rooms, and food preparation areas
  • Guide, train, and oversee subordinate staff in food preparation, equipment use, and sanitation procedures
