Job Requirements

  • Two years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in food preparation and cooking
  • Ability to work the scheduled shift from 5:00 AM to 1:30 PM with Thursday and Friday off
  • Ability to modify recipes for special diets
  • Ability to operate kitchen equipment safely
  • Ability to oversee kitchen staff and manage food storage
  • Compliance with sanitation and safety regulations
  • Successful completion of criminal background check
  • COVID-19 and influenza vaccination acknowledgment and attestation

Job Qualifications

  • At least two years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in preparation and cooking of food in a hotel, restaurant, cafeteria, catering firm, government or private institution
  • or any equivalent combination of required experience and substitutions
  • Diploma or certificate from recognized trade, technical or vocational school with major in culinary arts, food services or food trades may substitute for maximum one year of required experience
  • Bilingual or multilingual fluency preferred
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English
  • American Sign Language (ASL) preferred

Job Duties

  • Cook foods in quantities according to menu and number of persons to be served using standardized recipes and adjusting recipes as needed
  • Modify recipes as required for special and therapeutic diets, conferring with dietitians as necessary
  • Prepare meals for special functions
  • Evaluate food for quality, quantity, appearance, temperature, and taste through observation and tasting
  • Prepare baked goods
  • Operate kitchen equipment including ovens, stove, grill, steam kettles, blender, food processor, mixer, slicer, and grinder
  • Place food orders in absence of Food Service Supervisor, reviewing menu and checking inventory
  • Receive food orders and oversee storage
  • Maintain records such as requisitions, production sheets, and other required forms
  • Use measuring utensils for recipe standardization and portion control
  • Oversee work and assign Kitchen Service Workers (KSWs)
  • Maintain a safe and clean work area by complying with sanitation codes and participating in cleaning and maintenance activities
  • Inspect work and storage areas for compliance with department protocols and sanitation codes
  • Provide on-the-job training for new cooks and others to ensure compliance with safety, sanitation, and food preparation requirements
  • Assist tray-line/dining room as assigned, reading and interpreting diet cards
