Job Description

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is a prominent state agency dedicated to improving the health, safety, and well-being of Texans. Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Minimum of 12 months experience cooking food in a service operation
  • Must pass fingerprint criminal background check
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen
  • Must meet registry checks including Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct
  • Able to lift at least 25 pounds
  • Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods
  • Ability to work in hot and/or cold conditions
  • Must be vaccinated for required immunizations per HHSC policy
  • If driving a state vehicle, must have a valid Texas driver license or obtain one within 90 days of hire
  • Males aged 18-25 must be registered with Selective Service

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 12 months cooking experience in a food service operation
  • Knowledge of food preparation methods and sanitation regulations
  • Ability to operate and sanitize food service equipment
  • Ability to prepare and serve food for therapeutic diets
  • Strong understanding of safety and hygiene protocols
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Basic math skills applicable to cooking and food preparation
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English

Job Duties

  • Prepare and portion food for special diets following food service procedures
  • Prepare scheduled snacks and supplements
  • Maintain supply of snack items
  • Distribute food safely and sanitarily according to food service policies
  • Assist in serving food for special diets
  • Follow proper food handling according to food service, state, federal, and HACCP guidelines
  • Receive delivery of food and supplies from vendors
  • Sanitize kitchen, stock room, food preparation areas, and satellite areas
  • Maintain sanitary and organized work areas
  • Operate and sanitize food service equipment
  • Handle cash safely in the hospital canteen as required
  • Complete required training per agency policy
  • Participate in disaster response or COOP activities as assigned
