Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to lift minimum of 25 pounds
  • Ability to bend, reach, stand, and walk on hard floors for extended periods
  • Ability to work in hot and/or cold conditions
  • Ability to smell, taste, and see
  • Valid Texas driver license required if driving a state vehicle or must obtain within 90 days of hire
  • Must pass fingerprint criminal background check
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen
  • Registry checks including Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, and Employee Misconduct
  • Males ages 18-25 must be registered with Selective Service
  • Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures
  • Flexibility to work overtime and/or extended hours
  • All applicants must provide I-9 documentation in compliance with E-Verify
  • Applicants with out-of-state driver license must provide certified driving record within required timeframes

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Twelve months’ experience cooking food in a service operation
  • Knowledge of food preparation methods, food storage standards, and sanitation regulations
  • Skills in operation and sanitizing of food service equipment
  • Ability to prepare and serve food, clean dining and food preparation areas, and maintain accurate records
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Basic math skills used in cooking and preparation
  • Ability to speak and read English
  • Ability to work harmoniously and productively with co-workers and patients

Job Duties

  • Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or rotating schedule, extended shift, and/or overtime according to agency leave policy
  • Prepares and portions food for special diets following food service procedures
  • May be required to prepare scheduled snacks and supplements and maintain supply of snack items
  • Prepares and participates in the distribution of food in a safe and sanitary manner according to food service policies
  • May assist in serving food for special diets and follow food service procedures
  • Follows proper food handling according to food service procedures, state, federal, and HACCP guidelines
  • May receive delivery of food and supplies from vendors
  • Follows procedures for sanitation and storage of dishes and food service equipment
  • Maintains sanitation of kitchen, stock room, food preparation areas, and satellite areas
  • Follows safety procedures and practices
  • Works in hospital canteen and handles cash safely to protect interests of patients and state
  • Maintains work areas in a sanitary and organized manner
  • Answers telephone promptly and transmits messages clearly and positively
  • Completes required training per policy
  • Performs other duties as assigned including participation in disaster response and/or COOP activation
