Job Requirements

  • Three years of hospital, institutional, or restaurant cooking experience including food preparation
  • High school diploma with vocational training in food preparation or equivalent experience
  • ServSafe Food Handler Program Certificate
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in following and modifying recipes
  • Ability to safely operate foodservice equipment
  • Strong decision-making and communication skills
  • Customer service and teamwork orientation

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma with post high school vocational training in institutional food preparation and cooking or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Three years of hospital, institutional, or restaurant cooking experience including food preparation
  • ServSafe Food Handler Program Certificate
  • Ability to follow and modify recipes for quantity and taste
  • Skill in safely and effectively operating standard foodservice equipment
  • Strong adaptability, decision making, customer service, oral communication, planning, problem-solving, and teamwork skills
  • Preferred associate degree in institutional food preparation with emphasis in healthcare

Job Duties

  • Prepares and cooks food in large quantities for patient, guest, cafeteria, and catering services including scratch cooking from basic ingredients and attractive garnishing
  • Coordinates room service trayline ensuring sufficient and proper food items during meal service
  • Participates in recipe development and communicates effectively with staff
  • Follows recipes to prepare and cook food items
  • Modifies or converts recipes for different quantities, special diets, and other needs as directed by manager
  • Ensures proper quality and appearance of product according to established standards
  • Performs opening and closing of cooks and production areas including equipment check and temperature monitoring
  • Adheres to food handling, sanitation, and safety procedures
  • Maintains appropriate temperature, dating, labeling, and rotation of food items
  • Documents Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point logs routinely
  • Maintains organized food production areas for efficiency and cleanliness
  • Coordinates food orders and assists Food Service Aides
  • Stores leftovers properly and plans to minimize waste
  • Orders food supplies for cafeteria and maintains inventory
  • Receives, checks, and signs for foodstuff and issuing
  • Ensures hot food availability and monitors during cafeteria hours
  • Collaborates on daily, holiday, and theme menu planning
  • Ensures smooth cafeteria operations in supervisor’s absence
  • Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of equipment and work areas
  • Handles customer complaints and suggestions, implementing improvements
  • Instructs personnel on equipment safety and cleaning methods
  • Participates in quality improvement programs and projects
