Job Requirements

  • Must be in good general health
  • demonstrate emotional stability
  • be able to stand and walk short distances most of the day
  • be able to stoop, reach, and lift kitchen equipment and supplies
  • capable of lifting, pulling, and moving equipment or supplies over 50 lbs
  • ability to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, and occasionally hostile or emotionally upset individuals
  • must assist in the evacuation of residents if necessary
  • function independently
  • have flexibility and personal integrity

Job Qualifications

  • Compassion and desire to meet nutritional needs of frail elderly
  • general knowledge of basic food groups
  • ability to read and follow recipes
  • knowledge of food preparation, sanitation, and hygiene
  • ability to cook a variety of foods
  • familiarity with cooking times and seasonings
  • knowledge of low sodium, low cholesterol, and ADA diets
  • desire to serve palatable and visually pleasing food
  • ability to work cooperatively with staff, residents, and families
  • ability to function independently in a work environment
  • ability to handle complaints graciously and take correction maturely
  • honesty and trustworthiness
  • possession of food handlers’ certificate or willingness to obtain within two weeks of employment

Job Duties

  • Report to work on time every day as scheduled and ready to carry out duties
  • react to changes in schedules productively
  • identify and report safety hazards or take corrective measures
  • prepare and serve meals at scheduled times (8 am, noon, 5 pm)
  • follow written menus and make menu suggestions using all food groups
  • cover, label, date, and properly store leftovers
  • comply with state and local food service regulations including temperature control and labeling
  • follow proper cleaning procedures
  • ensure mealtimes are enjoyable by being attentive and kind to residents
  • eliminate food waste
  • participate in weekly inventory checks and submit lists timely
  • know residents’ food preferences to avoid serving disliked meals
  • clean kitchen, dining room, and pantry daily
  • prioritize portion control and cost management
  • handle cleaning products safely
  • perform additional tasks as assigned by management
