Job Requirements
- One year of increasingly responsible food preparation experience in a food service facility
- Food Handler’s Registration issued by the Austin/Travis County Health Human Services Department or Texas Department of State Health Services
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination
- Subject to standing, walking, sitting, repetitive motion, reaching, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, balancing, reaching and twisting to perform essential functions
- Willingness to submit to background checks, physical exam, drug and alcohol tests
- Flexible availability to work part-time up to 24 hours per week
- Ability to work in secure juvenile detention facility environment
Job Qualifications
- One year of increasingly responsible food preparation experience in a food service facility
- Food Handler’s Registration issued by Austin/Travis County Health Human Services Department or Texas Department of State Health Services
- Knowledge of methods of preparing and storing food in large volumes
- Knowledge of methods of preparing modified and calculated diets
- Knowledge of health, sanitation, nutritional and safety practices involved in food preparation
- Knowledge of general office and clerical practices and procedures
- Skill in using and cleaning equipment and materials for food preparation
- Skill in both verbal and written communication
- Ability to exercise judgment and initiative in estimating food quantities
- Ability to work independently and efficiently
- Ability to manage time well and meet timelines
- Ability to determine appropriate procedures, methods, and priorities for completing assigned work
- Ability to follow and understand verbal and written instructions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental clientele, outside agencies, other county employees and officials, and the general public
Job Duties
- Plan, prepare and cook meats, soups, vegetables, sauces, gravies, salads and desserts
- Check food for appearance and taste
- Serve meals using proper portion control and acceptable methods of serving
- Carve and display meats, vegetables, salads and desserts
- Plan for proper utilization of overproduced foods
- Operate, clean, and maintain cooking utensils and related kitchen equipment
- Ensure kitchen equipment is operational
- Maintain cleanliness and safe working conditions in the kitchen according to Health Department standards
- Ensure proper storage of food and kitchen supplies
- Store and rotate perishable and nonperishable food
- Monitor inventory of food supplies
- Set dishes and dining room equipment in proper storage
- Receive and monitor kitchen deliveries
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned
