Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Prior experience in food preparation or cooking
  • Knowledge of sanitary and hygiene regulations
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Serv Safe Manager’s Certificate and Food Handler’s permit
  • Ability to work flexible hours including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Physical ability to perform kitchen tasks
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with residents, staff and supervisors

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Prior cooking experience in a healthcare or senior living environment preferred
  • Knowledge of food safety practices and sanitation standards
  • Ability to follow approved recipes and menus
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Valid Serv Safe Manager’s Certificate and Food Handler’s permit preferred or willingness to obtain
  • Basic math skills for portion control and inventory management
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods and lift moderate weights

Job Duties

  • Prepare and serve all food items and meals in accordance with planned menus and recipes ensuring all meals and food prepared are of high quality, palatable and appetizing
  • Assist in food preparation for special meals, parties, events
  • Inspect special diet requests and orders to assure that the correct diet is being served
  • Prepare and serve substitute foods to residents who refuse foods served
  • Make only authorized food substitutions and consult with and advise Culinary Services Director on menu changes
  • Prepare food and serve in accordance with sanitary regulations, as well as with established policies and procedures
  • Report any incidents or infractions to Culinary Services Director
  • Ensure that food storage areas are clean and properly arranged at all times
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Serv Safe Manager’s Certificate and Food Handler’s permit
  • Assist in purchasing of food and supplies
  • Ensure that stock levels of staple/non-staple food, supplies, equipment are maintained at adequate levels
  • Properly label, date and store all food leftovers
  • Check in all purchases in absence of Culinary Services Director
  • Assist in inventory and storing in-coming food, supplies
  • Assist in serving meals as necessary on a timely basis
  • Open or close kitchen as dictated by department scheduling
  • Record temperatures of coolers and freezers as required by company policy
  • Ensure all staff arrive and/or depart at scheduled times as posted in absence of Culinary Services Director
  • Responsible for cleaning duties assigned to position
  • Ensure that the next day’s items are in stock and pulled and thawing under refrigeration
  • Prepare soups, appetizers, entrees, vegetables, side dishes, and desserts for both regular and special diets
  • Plan timing of food production to coordinate with meal serving hours
  • Maintain control over meal portions and food consistency
  • Responsible for safe storage and efficient use of kitchen inventory
  • Responsible for set-up of carts to be delivered to resident dining areas
  • Display tact and friendliness when dealing with residents, families and visitors
  • Provide support to community marketing efforts through positive/friendly interaction
  • Communicate any observed or suspected resident change of condition to supervisor immediately
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for staff, residents and guests
  • Encourage teamwork through cooperation with co-workers and other departments
  • Support a positive and professional image through actions and dress
  • Perform other duties consistent with the position as assigned by Culinary Services Director
