Job Requirements

  • high school diploma or equivalent
  • prior experience as a cook or in a similar role
  • valid serv safe manager's certificate
  • valid food handler's permit
  • ability to lift heavy items and stand for extended periods
  • ability to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays
  • strong organizational skills
  • ability to follow health and safety regulations
  • good communication skills
  • ability to work effectively with elderly residents

Job Duties

  • prepare and serve all food items and meals in accordance with planned menus and recipes ensuring all meals and food prepared are of high quality, palatable and appetizing
  • assist in food preparation for special meals, parties, events
  • inspect special diet requests and orders to assure that the correct diet is being served
  • prepare and serve substitute foods to residents who refuse foods served
  • make only authorized food substitutions and consult with and advise culinary services director on menu changes
  • prepare food and serve in accordance with sanitary regulations
  • ensure that food storage areas are clean and properly arranged at all times
  • obtain and maintain a valid serv safe manager's certificate and food handler's permit
  • assist in the purchasing of food and supplies
  • dispose of food and waste in accordance with established policies
  • properly label, date and store all food leftovers
  • check in all purchases in absence of culinary services director
  • assist in serving meals as necessary on a timely basis
  • open or close kitchen as dictated by department scheduling
  • record temperatures of coolers and freezers as required by company policy
  • ensure all staff arrive and depart at scheduled times in absence of culinary services director
  • be responsible for cleaning items assigned
  • ensure next day's items are in stock and thawing under refrigeration
  • prepare soups, appetizers, entrees, vegetables, side dishes, and desserts for both regular and special diets
  • plan timing of food production to coordinate with meal serving hours
  • maintain control over meal portions and food consistency
  • responsible for safe storage and efficient use of kitchen inventory
  • set up carts for delivery to resident dining areas if applicable
  • display tact and friendliness with residents, families, and visitors
  • provide support to community's marketing efforts through friendly interactions during tours and telephone contact
  • communicate any observed or suspected resident condition changes to supervisor
  • maintain a safe and secure environment following safety standards
  • encourage teamwork through cooperative interactions
  • support a positive and professional image through actions and dress
  • perform other duties assigned by culinary services director
