Job Requirements
- Current City of Norfolk food handling training required at time of hire
- high school diploma or GED equivalent required
- prior professional cooking experience required
- record of completion for all education, licenses, training, and certifications required at time of hire
- continuous recertification and maintenance of state licensure, certification, and education requirements during employment
- ability to work varying shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
- knowledge and understanding of public health, safety, and food handling and sanitation standards and procedures
- ability to follow printed recipes and plate specifications
- ability to operate and maintain commercial kitchen equipment
- FBI fingerprinting, criminal background check, and Child Protective Services registry search for increased security clearance if working in Children’s Pavilion
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent

Job Duties
- Prepares high-quality food items according to standardized recipes and instructions
- serves meals and prepares them for delivery using correct portioning and ensuring food is at the correct temperature
- uses established ticket collection procedures during service periods
- maintains high standards of cleanliness in kitchen, refrigerators, freezers, and storerooms
- stores food following food safety, wrapping, dating, and rotation procedures or discards excess food safely
- operates and maintains kitchen equipment as instructed
- ensures kitchen operations comply with food safety and sanitation standards and policies
- assists in production planning, record keeping, and reporting
- assists in ordering and receiving food and supplies
- reports maintenance needs or equipment faults immediately
- attends in-service and safety meetings
- maintains good relationships with colleagues and customers
- performs job safely while maintaining a clean work environment
- performs other duties as assigned
