The Cumberland County Detention Center is a correctional facility dedicated to maintaining safety, security, and humane treatment for inmates while supporting the community it serves. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or General Educational Development preferred
- One year of experience in food preparation and management
- Submission of high school transcripts or GED within 2 days of receiving supporting documentation email
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License
- Birth certificate
- Military DD-214 Member-4 if applicable
- Signed Social Security card
- Authorization of release of personal information to Cumberland County Sheriff's Office
- Notarized authorization for release form with free notary service provided by the office
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or General Educational Development preferred
- One year of experience involving food preparation and management
- Knowledge of principles and practices of preparing, cooking, and serving food
- Understanding of sanitation and food handling procedures
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Effective time-management skills
- Ability to direct and supervise less experienced cooks and inmate workers
- Knowledge of State and Local Health Regulations and Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations on food services
- Ability to maintain a safe, orderly, and secure work environment
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to establish cooperative working relationships
Job Duties
- Performs preparatory work and cooks' food for inmates and staff following approved menus/receipts
- Ensures proper food handling practices are followed according to sanitation procedures
- Prepares food from scratch, cooking to proper appearance, seasoning, and taste while following recipe directions
- Prepares food in advance to ensure prompt service: boiling of breakfast cereals, thawing of foodstuffs for future use and/or pre-cooking of meal items
- Directs the work of less experienced cooks and inmate workers to ensure that work is performed in accordance with proper food handling and sanitation procedures
- Serves food to inmates assuring that adequate portions are provided
- Cleans and maintains proper sanitation for the kitchen equipment, dishes, pots, pans and utensils

- Prepares and cooks special diet foods based on health-related issues, food allergies, or religious restrictions of individual inmates
- Ensures special diet trays are marked for the inmate concerned and delivered to correct locations
- Performs daily inventory counts, receives supplies from vendors and stores properly
