Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of one year of increasingly responsible experience (paid or volunteer) as a Community Services or Recreation Leader or equivalent
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License
  • Possession of CPR/AED/First Aid certificate or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Must maintain certifications as a condition of continued employment
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings, holidays, weekends, and split-shifts
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Willingness to work in various environments including office settings, recreational facilities, and occasional outdoor conditions
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, before groups, and by telephone

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of an Associate's Degree is highly desirable
  • Minimum of one year of increasingly responsible experience (paid or volunteer) as a Community Services or Recreation Leader or equivalent
  • Knowledge of basic community services/recreation activities, philosophies, and concepts
  • Understanding principles and techniques of planning, organizing, and conducting recreation, leisure, and volunteer programs
  • Familiarity with public relations and publicity methods
  • Ability to use research techniques, methods, and procedures
  • Competency in report writing and presentations (verbal and written)
  • Knowledge of sports, crafts, music, and general play skills
  • Awareness of appropriate safety precautions and procedures
  • Ability to plan, develop, and supervise community services programs, classes, and special events
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Capability to organize, facilitate, and secure cooperation of all age groups
  • Proficiency in utilizing computer systems, software, and applicable applications
  • Skill in gaining and holding the enthusiasm of individuals and groups
  • Ability to interpret and follow departmental policies, laws, and rules
  • Strong analytical skills to adopt effective courses of action
  • Ability to understand and carry out written instructions

Job Duties

  • Participate in and conduct recreation activities, program planning, attend staff meetings, review current programs and make recommendations to immediate supervisor
  • Plan, organize and supervise group activities and programs
  • Keep score or record for citywide youth sports programs as needed
  • Conduct recreation programs, after-school programs, special events, or youth sports as assigned
  • Chaperone at dances, excursions or special events
  • Monitor volunteers to ensure they are meeting city and department requirements as assigned
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports of programs and activities
  • Set up rooms for activities or rentals
  • Supervise and monitor facility rentals to ensure applicant complies with city and department policies and procedures
  • Be familiar with the department flyers and publications and be able to share accurate information with customers regarding department programs/services
  • Facilitate enrollment and registration/enrollment transactions in a controlled point of sale environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned
