Job Requirements

  • Completion of 12th grade or GED
  • four years of experience in organized recreation, cultural art or community programs
  • possession or ability to obtain valid California Class C driver's license
  • possession or ability to obtain CPR and basic first aid certificates
  • ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise assigned programs
  • strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
  • physical ability to perform duties including prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending and stooping
  • keen near and far vision and acute hearing
  • ability to use computer equipment for report preparation

Job Qualifications

  • Completion of 12th grade or GED supplemented by college coursework in recreation, public administration, early childhood development, education or related field
  • bachelor's degree preferred
  • four years of experience in organized recreation, cultural art or community programs
  • knowledge of procedures and methods for planning and implementing recreation and community services
  • knowledge of basic principles and practices of recreation administration
  • knowledge of principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting
  • knowledge of principles and practices of promotion and advertising
  • understanding of recreational, cultural and social needs of the community
  • knowledge of current budgeting procedures and techniques
  • knowledge of principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation
  • proficiency with modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment
  • knowledge of program planning and development procedures

Job Duties

  • Plan, coordinate, assign, and supervise work of staff in recreation, community service and cultural art activities including excursions, special events, facility usage, senior activities, sports programs, youth and teen programs, and registration on a city-wide basis
  • assist in the recommendation and implementation of goals and objectives
  • implement policies and procedures
  • evaluate operation and activities in assigned program areas
  • recommend improvements and modifications
  • prepare various reports on operations and activities
  • ensure assigned program compliance with laws, rules and regulations related to provision of recreation services
  • assist in the selection of staff
  • participate in the training of staff and volunteers
  • work with employees to correct deficiencies
  • implement discipline procedures
  • assist in budget preparation and administration
  • prepare cost estimates for budget recommendations
  • monitor and control expenditures
  • develop alternative funding sources
  • recommend and implement new creative programs
  • be on site during operation hours and delegate responsibility when present
  • prepare program and event publicity including news releases, flyers, pamphlets, and brochures
  • maintain records and prepare related reports
  • review process and approve contractual and staff payroll
  • maintain records for registration and fees collected
  • establish and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment
  • order supplies
  • maintain equipment in safe working conditions
  • act as liaison between Department and public sector
  • answer questions and provide information
  • investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary
  • communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
  • establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted
  • perform other tasks or functions necessary to daily operations
