Job Requirements

  • Must be a regular full-time City employee who has passed the original probationary period or at-will full-time City employee with twelve months of consecutive employment
  • must be a San Marcos Fire Department Certified Driver Operator or equivalent
  • must have completed education and training in fire hydraulics, apparatus and equipment, or completed Driver Operator 1A and 1B
  • must have a minimum of two years firefighting experience with San Marcos Fire Department or three years full-time firefighting experience with a structural fire protection fire department
  • must have a valid California Driver License - Class C with Firefighter Endorsement
  • must possess State of California/National Registry EMT or Paramedic License
  • must have San Diego County EMT or EMT-P Accreditation
  • must maintain current CPR Certificate, BLS-C
  • must hold California State Firefighter I and II Certificates
  • must have Hazardous Materials First Responder Operational Certificate
  • all fire service employees hired after July 1, 1992 must be non-smokers
  • must have no felony convictions
  • must be able to work a 56-hour workweek
  • must maintain satisfactory DMV driving record
  • must live within Department residency boundary within one year of appointment
  • must reside within 275 miles of San Marcos

  • knowledge of laws pertaining to fire and EMS operations
  • ability to perform under pressure

  • ability to operate fire apparatus efficiently

Job Duties

  • Responds to fire alarms, emergency medical calls, and other emergency calls to protect life and property
  • drives, operates, and maintains fire apparatus
  • participates in fire training, fire prevention, public education, and station and equipment maintenance activities
  • performs first aid and life saving duties by supporting and assisting paramedics
  • sets ladders, operates fire streams, ventilates and enters burning structures to extinguish fires and perform rescues
  • operates pneumatic and auxiliary equipment
  • performs mathematical calculations to assess hydraulic flows
  • conducts salvage and overhaul operations during and after fires
  • cleans and maintains fire station and apparatus
  • performs fire prevention and pre-fire planning inspections
  • participates in drills and training activities
  • updates station bulletin boards and maps
  • presents programs and participates in public relations programs
  • operates fire and rescue apparatus safely
  • performs other related duties as required
