Job Requirements
- Must possess a class A commercial driver's license with double/triple, hazardous materials, and tank endorsements
- must have minimum of one year driving experience within the last three years or completed driver development course
- must have an acceptable motor vehicle record
- must meet all Department of Transportation regulatory requirements
- must obtain hazardous materials endorsement within 120 days of hire
- must be physically capable of lifting heavy freight up to 100 pounds regularly
- must be able to perform job duties involving various physical activities such as sitting, bending, climbing
- must adhere to company policies and comply with all applicable laws and regulations
- must be able to communicate effectively
- must have the ability to perform basic math
- must be flexible to work varied hours and provide excellent customer service
- must pass necessary safety inspections and documentation requirements
Job Qualifications
- Possess a class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with double/triple, hazardous materials, and tank endorsements
- have one year of experience within the last three years or successful FedEx Freight Driver Development Course completion
- hold an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record based on hiring standards
- meet Department of Transportation regulatory requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier regulations
- meet Long Combination Vehicles qualification and certification standards if operating in specified states
- basic math and ability to count accurately
- basic written and verbal communication skills
- ability to lift and carry hand freight up to 100 pounds several times a week
- ability to sit for extended periods, bend, twist, squat, and climb in and out of trucks
- ability to work independently or as part of a team
- ability to follow instructions and complete required training
Job Duties
- Operate tractor-trailer combinations including doubles and triples where applicable and/or straight trucks
- perform daily pre-trip and safety inspections on equipment
- hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from tractor and/or trailer
- perform freight handling using motorized and manual equipment including forklift, pallet jack, and hand truck
- secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, and rope
- recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary
- verify and complete required documentation and reports
- comply with hazardous material regulations and procedures
- collect cash or checks for freight charges and maintain documentation
- follow dispatch instructions and communicate with dispatch regarding delays, arrivals, and equipment problems
- communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs and solicit additional business
- demonstrate internal and external customer service
- ask for additional business from customers and provide sales leads
- perform chaining of vehicle tires as required
- perform duties of road driver or dock employee when necessary
- comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies
- perform other duties as assigned
