Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Speak, read and write English effectively
  • Complete a background investigation with favorable results
  • Successfully complete pre-employment checks including Childcare Tier 1 background investigation
  • Obtain and maintain current immunizations including annual influenza vaccinations
  • Be free of communicable diseases
  • Possess a valid state driver's license if required to transport children
  • Pass a physical examination and meet specific physical requirements
  • Undergo pre-employment drug screening and be subject to random drug testing
  • Meet additional federal employment eligibility and security requirements

Job Qualifications

  • At least 24 months working in any childcare or youth program with completion of DoD approved competency training courses
  • Successful completion of all required training for program assistant levels
  • Or 24 months of specialized experience working in group programs with children or youth plus an associate degree or 60 semester hours with relevant major course of study
  • Or possession of a recognized child development or youth credential such as child development associate credential or military school age credential
  • Or a bachelor’s degree or 120 semester hours with major courses related to early childhood education, child development, youth development, human development, elementary education, special education, secondary education, youth program administration, recreation, or physical education
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English
  • Experience working with children and youth in a developmental setting

Job Duties

  • Serve as team leader for program staff with responsibility for the operation and program in accordance with applicable regulation
  • Accountable for the whereabouts and safety of children and youth
  • Oversees arrival/departure of children/youth
  • Supervises children and youth during indoor and outdoor activities, field trips, outings, and special events
  • Monitors staff/child or youth ratios to ensure adequate staffing
  • Plans, coordinates, and conducts activities for program participants based on observed needs
  • Prepares and implements program options for children and youth with special requirements
  • Works with trainer and supervisor to implement activities and special events that meet physical, social, emotional, and cognitive needs
  • Maintains indoor and outdoor activity areas and materials
  • Assists children and youth with special projects, homework, and life skills
  • Interacts with children and youth using approved child guidance and youth development techniques
  • Interacts professionally with staff, parents, supervisors, and volunteers
  • Participates in conferences with parents and program staff
  • Notes special instructions provided by parents
  • Ensures authorized person departs with children/youth as instructed
  • Provides parental involvement opportunities
  • Trains team members in specific tasks and techniques
  • Explains program guidance, procedures, policies, and directives to team members
  • Resolves problems and conflict situations
  • Demonstrates proper work methods and provides guidance to subordinates
  • Models appropriate behaviors for working with children/youth
  • Conducts on-the-job training
  • Ensures compliance with safety, fire, fitness, health, and nutrition procedures
  • Provides input for promotions, performance appraisals, and awards
  • Observes participants for illness, abuse or neglect and reports as directed
  • Arranges and serves snacks/meals
  • Inventories equipment and recommends replenishing supplies
  • Secures supplies, equipment, and facilities
  • Collects, maintains, and reports program participation data
  • Ensures compliance with AF and DoD certification and national accreditation standards
  • Provides care, supervision, oversight, and accountability in line with policies
  • Acts as manager in non-routine/emergency situations
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
