Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • minimum two years experience in cooking and food service operations
  • safe food handling certification or ability to obtain within six months
  • knowledge of food safety and sanitation regulations
  • physical ability to lift and move heavy items up to 50 pounds and push/pull over 500 pounds
  • ability to stand, walk, and squat for extended periods
  • good English communication skills both oral and written
  • willingness to work under hot and humid kitchen conditions
  • ability to work under supervision and as part of a team
  • attention to detail and compliance with facility food service policies and procedures

Job Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalency preferred
  • minimum of two years combined experience in institutional or restaurant cooking techniques and food service operations
  • knowledge of safety and sanitation practices
  • possession of or ability to obtain safe food handling certification within six months of start
  • working knowledge of food preparation equipment and kitchen utensils
  • good oral and written communication skills
  • ability to follow standardized recipes and menus
  • familiarity with food safety and sanitation guidelines
  • ability to use basic computer skills for communication
  • strong interpersonal skills
  • capable of leading and training staff in absence of supervisor
  • excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • creative and proactive approach to customer service needs

Job Duties

  • Prepare food using small batch cooking schedules throughout meal periods and monitor steam table temperatures
  • ensure sanitizing solutions are available at work areas and wiping towels are stored in them
  • record quantities of foods produced including over and under amounts
  • study recipes and gather necessary ingredients to adhere to standardized recipes and use portion control
  • follow recipe work methods using proper time and temperature control to cook and hold foods at required serving temperatures
  • report equipment malfunctions or safety hazards to management immediately
  • clean equipment and work areas thoroughly in accordance with company policies and procedures
  • respond promptly to customer needs and ensure food preparation follows menus while honoring patients and residents’ dietary preferences when possible
  • complete duties in a timely fashion within approved time frames
  • ensure tray tickets, meal orders, recipe, and document binders are accurate, clean and legible
  • complete mandatory and routine training as required by facility policies
  • monitor and maintain stock levels to place orders for supplies as needed and support cost control efforts and department budget targets
  • lead and direct other staff in absence of supervisor and model behaviors supporting department safety and employee conduct standards
  • adjust menus related to product shortages or production issues to meet operational needs
  • utilize good interpersonal skills to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • apply good organizational and problem-solving skills to multitask and coordinate activities under pressure and time constraints
  • attend proactively to the needs of customers including patients, residents, and visitors
