Job Requirements
- Must be 16 years of age or older
- ability to work varied shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays
- capable of lifting and maneuvering objects frequently up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds
- able to perform visual inspections and read merchandise information
- manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination required
- ability to communicate effectively using hearing and speech
- complete written forms accurately
- maintain composure and tact in customer service relations
- learn and memorize product look up codes, company policies and procedures
- navigate potentially high stress situations including handling unsatisfied customers
- operate check stand equipment with mental alertness and basic math
- occasionally use blades for box cutting
- use household cleaners safely to maintain work area
- fulfill any state and local certification requirements such as food safety/handlers cards or tobacco and alcohol sales certification as applicable
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- prior retail or cashier experience advantageous but not required
- strong interpersonal and communication skills
- ability to perform suggestive selling and basic sales techniques
- proficiency in handling cash and various payment methods
- familiarity with safety and sanitation standards
- basic math skills including add, subtract, multiply and divide
- ability to operate check stand equipment such as cash registers, scanners, and scales
- ability to stand or sit for extended periods
- willingness to learn product locations, codes and company procedures
- ability to manage high volume customer interactions in a fast-paced environment
Job Duties
- Seek opportunities to welcome, engage, serve and thank customers
- maintain an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service
- operate check stand equipment such as cash register, scanner and scale to process customer orders
- engage in suggestive selling and other sales techniques
- process monetary transactions including cash, checks, gift certificates, travelers checks, food stamps, coupons, and refunds
- maintain knowledge of current product location, monitor UPC codes and ensure proper pricing
- maintain clean, neat and properly stocked check stand and ensure a safe and secure work area
- stock, price and rotate merchandise
- monitor multiple simultaneous transactions and verify payments
- provide assistance and engage with customers at self-checkout kiosks to ensure accuracy and limit shrinkage
- follow all state and federal laws concerning the sale of restricted or regulated items such as tobacco and alcohol
- adhere to USDA Food Stamp and WIC voucher procedures
- perform other duties as assigned or needed
