Job Requirements

  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Ability to work varied shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to communicate effectively (hearing and speech) to perform customer relation tasks
  • Ability to complete written forms
  • Ability to conduct visual inspection and read merchandise information
  • Ability to lift and maneuver objects up to 20 lbs frequently and occasionally up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to stand or sit for long periods, walk rapidly, bend, stoop, twist, and turn frequently
  • Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination
  • Ability to learn and memorize PLU codes, product locations, check stand procedures, and company policies
  • Mental alertness for scanning and verifying sales with basic math skills
  • Occasionally use blades for box cutting
  • Use household cleaners to maintain work area
  • Ability to maintain composure in high stress situations and manage volatile or unsatisfied customers
  • Compliance with food safety, tobacco, and alcohol certifications as required by law
  • Ability to navigate potentially high-volume transaction environments

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Previous retail or cashier experience is an asset
  • Ability to operate cash register, scanners, and scales
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to perform friendly, courteous, tactful relations with customers and co-workers
  • Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to learn and memorize a considerable amount of product and policy information
  • Capacity to handle monetary transactions with accuracy
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to tobacco, alcohol, and food stamp sales

Job Duties

  • Seeks opportunities to welcome, engage, serve and thank customers
  • Maintains an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service with an emphasis on taking care of the customer
  • Operates check stand equipment such as a cash register, scanner and scale to process customer orders using two aisles
  • Engages in suggestive selling and other sales techniques
  • Processes monetary transactions including cash, checks, gift certificates, travelers checks, food stamps, coupons, and refunds adhering to cash handling and lane accountability policies
  • Maintains knowledge of current product location, monitors UPC codes and ensures proper pricing
  • Maintains clean, neat and properly stocked check stand and ensures safe and secure work area
  • Stocks, prices and rotates merchandise
  • May be assigned to multi station self-checkout lanes or customer service counter as needed
  • Follows all state and federal laws concerning the sale of restricted or regulated items such as tobacco and alcohol
  • Adheres to USDA food stamp and WIC voucher procedures
  • Regularly moves within SCO area to expedite transactions, maintain attentive presence and keep area clear of safety hazards
  • Initiates and engages contact with customers at self-checkout kiosks to assist and ensure accuracy
  • Responds to SCO station alerts and errors to address and clear customer transaction issues
  • Monitors multiple simultaneous transactions in fast paced settings
  • Maintains high awareness of self-checkout area, anticipates customer needs and prioritizes safety of employees and customers
  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed
