Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Ability to work varied shifts including nights, weekends and holidays
  • Ability to communicate effectively using hearing and speech
  • Ability to lift and maneuver objects up to 20 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • Ability to operate check stand equipment such as cash registers, scanners and scales
  • Ability to stand or sit for long periods and perform repetitive tasks
  • Possess manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination
  • Ability to learn and memorize PLU codes, product locations, procedures and policies
  • Ability to ensure accuracy in scanning and monetary transactions with basic math skills
  • Ability to manage high-stress situations and handle unsatisfied customers professionally
  • Ability to complete written forms
  • Ability to conduct visual inspections and read merchandise information
  • Ability to perform friendly, courteous, tactful relations with customers and co-workers
  • Must have food safety/handlers card and tobacco and alcohol sales certification as required by state and local laws

Job Duties

  • Seeks opportunities to welcome, engage, serve and thank customers
  • Operates check stand equipment such as cash register, scanner and scale
  • Engages in suggestive selling and other sales techniques
  • Processes monetary transactions including cash, checks, gift certificates, food stamps, coupons, and refunds
  • Maintains knowledge of product locations, monitors UPC codes, and ensures proper pricing
  • Maintains clean and stocked check stand and ensures safe work area
  • Stocks, prices and rotates merchandise
  • May be assigned to self-checkout lane or customer service counter
  • Follows all state and federal laws concerning sale of restricted items such as tobacco and alcohol
  • Adheres to USDA Food Stamp or WIC voucher procedures
  • Responds to and clears alerts and errors at self-checkout stations
  • Monitors multiple simultaneous transactions and verifies payment accuracy
  • Actively assists customers at self-checkout kiosks to ensure accuracy and limit shrinkage
  • Prioritizes safety by addressing or reporting concerns
